From the early beginnings of Guru, DJ 1, Mike Dee and producers Donald D, J.V. Johnson and DJ Mark the 45 King to the most popular version of the group featuring Guru and DJ Premier, Gang Starr has held legendary status for almost 30 years. Gang Starr’s single “Mass Appeal” is from the album Hard to Earn off of EMI Records which also featured tracks such as “DWYCK” featuring Nice & Smooth, “Code of the Streets” and “Suckas Need Bodyguards” featuring Melachi the Nutcracker. “Mass Appeal” was written by Guru and Christopher Martin. The track was an instant hit and reached as high as 67 on the Billboard Top 100 which was almost unheard of from a non-pop/crossover hip hop act in 1994.

Rest in peace Keith Elam aka Guru. Thanks to your legacy, an entire generation of hip hop only needs to put on a track from you and DJ Premier to know what real hip-hop is supposed to sound like.
